Mamma Mia! is today’s by far most popular musical. More than 30 million people have seen and celebrated the world’s number one show since its premier in London in 1999. Dealing with love, family, friendship and paternity, the unconventional musical comedy combines 22 magic ABBA classics into a unique pop experience. After beating the records at the Broadway and in London’s West End, ten productions around the globe demonstrated the overwhelming response to Mamma Mia! Among them, the international tour of the original version stands out with more than two million visitors.
In January 2009, the world class production of “the world’s most musical fun” (BBC) returns to Vienna’s Stadthalle, where 45 sold out performances have already been celebrated by an audience of over 100,000 in 2005/2006.
Mamma Mia! is set on a small Greek island. The night before her wedding, Sophie, 20, sets out on a quest for the identity of her father. Reading her mother’s diary, Sophie comes across the names of three old lovers and invites them to the wedding. They agree to meet again at the same place where, 20 years earlier, each of them had a romantic encounter with Sophie’s mother Donna. The chaos culminates in the arrival of Donna’s best school day friends: The past turns into the present, and the confusion is complete.
